Tips for Making the Most of Your Eyelash Extensions

You’ve splurged on a full set of glorious lash extensions. Now what?

To keep them looking great and extend time between fill sessions, you’ll need to take a few precautions to help them stay long and lush.

The first step for long-lasting looks is to only get lash extensions from licensed professionals who are skilled in all aspects of lash installation and maintenance. Here are some other steps you can take!

1. Sleep Right, Sleep Tight

New lashes, new sleeping position. Sleeping on your side or back are best to avoid crushing your beautiful lashes. Stomach sleepers, this may require a bit of practice!

2. Easy Does It

When it comes to washing your face or removing eye makeup, be very gentle. Rubbing or aggressive wiping around the eyes could dislodge your lashes. Clean your entire face with a water-based cleanser or cleansing wipe, then use a cotton swab dipped in the same water-based cleanser to remove any eye makeup, being very gentle around the lash line. ABSOLUTELY no oil-based products should be used on or around your eyes. Oil breaks down the lash adhesive.

3. Just Say “No” to Mascara & Lash Curlers

Lash curlers can damage your lashes and mascara contains oils (even water-based ones) that will breakdown the adhesive used to attach your lashes, causing them to fall out. If your lashes get tangled or need definition between fills, use a dry lash wand to gently brush and separate lashes.

4. Hands Off!

When your eyes are tired, or when you’re sleepy, resist the urge to rub your them. Rubbing your eyes may cause your eyelashes to dislodge from the lash line. If you need to wipe tears or watery eyes, gently dab your lashes with a tissue. DON’T RUB! And also be mindful of the eyedrops you use as well.

5. Avoid Eyeliners & Oil-Based Makeup

Eyeliners can create build-up along the lash line that will gunk up your lashes. Oil-based makeup, moisturizers, and eye shadow will breakdown lash adhesive and cause lashes to detach. Keep your lashes fresh and intact until your next fill by using powder-based eye shadows to play up your eyes, being mindful to not apply directly to the lash line. And never apply oil-based moisturizer to the eyelids.

Finally, as beautiful as lash extensions can be, it’s important to give your natural lashes a break and allow them a resting period. We recommend taking a month between full lash installations, this will allow your lashes to get stronger. Lash fall out is lessened when your natural lashes are healthy and strong.

During this rest period, use light oils on your lashes at night to help strengthen them. Like hair on your head, lashes need moisture to stay healthy. Lash serums can be used too, but Argan and Coconut oil are ideal for lash use. Just rub a drop or two, into the lash line, and blot off the excess to avoid getting into the eye.

To avoid folliculitis (follicle inflammation) along the lash line, be sure to always remove eye makeup at night. If you experience itching, swelling, or irritation along your lash line during or after a lash install, visit your dermatologist or general physician to make sure you’re not having an allergic reaction to the cosmetic adhesive.
